British railways Illustrated

Now approaching its 30th year and long known by its cheerful acronym 'BRILL', British Railways Illustrated is known and respected for the depth and quality of its historically-based articles.
Focussing on the nationalised and early modernisation era of British Railways from 1948 to the 1970s, any aspect of vintage railway operations is grist to the mill as long as it is well-researched and written. The camera, we are told, never lies, but it can be 'economical with the truth, so BRILL's team of contributors paint a bigger picture, with extended and informed captions bringing to life the classic black and white photography that constitutes the bulk of its content.
Featuring a colour cover, 56 pages of text and, typically, 60-70 high quality black and white images, most issues include maps and plans/diagrams where appropriate. 'History with a good helping of nostalgia' is its hallmark with some humour thrown in. .

Railway Bylines

RAILWAY BYLINES, now in its 26th year. Colour cover, 56 pages of text and, like British Railways Illustrated, some 60-70 high quality black and white images. There are maps and plans/diagrams in most issues.
Subject matter is wide ranging and the BYLINES in the title is very deliberate; homely branch lines serving villages and country towns, industrial lines serving mills, foundries, works, quarries, mines and ports, together with their often ancient locomotives and their correspondingly elderly and eccentric stock. Both standard and narrow gauge with occasional Irish subjects.
Most frequently portrayed period is the 1950s-1960s before such workings and lines began to disappear, though occasionally earlier eras are covered. Editorial is wide-ranging - buildings, stock, structures, social/human aspects and so on - history/nostalgia with a light touch that matches its often out-of-the-way, off-beat subjects.

Narrow Gauge and Industrial Railway Modelling Review

Narrow Gauge & Industrial Railway Modelling REVIEW was started in 1989 by Roy C Link in partnership with Mike Brown. Roy's concept for the REVIEW was the setting of subject material - prototypes and models - in the best possible light.
In 1994 (from issue 19) Roy had to hand over to Mike Brown through poor health. In 1997 Mike then relinquished editorship due to ill health so Roy took back the REVIEW again (from issue 32). In 2012 (from issue 89) the REVIEW was sold to Greystar with Bob Barlow as editor with Roy remaining responsible for design and layout. Printing was also changed to Lavenham Press in Suffolk with Lavenham performing the quarterly mailing (formerly a manual process).
Unfortunately Bob died suddenly in 2015 so the REVIEW reverted back to Roy from issue 103. All the administration details had died with Bob, but with help from John Clutterbuck the list of subscribers was reestablished and new IT facilities and online shop put in place. In 2017 John and Marion Clutterbuck formally took over the REVIEW business under the Narrow Gauge and Industrial banner.
In March 2025 Guideline Publications included this fine magazine in their line-up to ensure its continued success.
Narrow Gauge & Industrial Railway Modelling Review will still be under the editorship of John Clutterbuck with assistance from Gary Hatcher until issue 145 when the roles will be reversed.
